Mount Monadnock Hike

The Southern New Hampshire Jewish Men’s Club is proud to announce a hike up Mt. Monadnock  on Sunday, November 04, 2018.  The hike is open to all genders, ages, and affiliations (you don’t have to be Jewish or a man to join us) – the important thing is that you like to hike!

  • Location:  Monadnock State Park, 169 Poole Road, Jaffrey, NH 03452.  Park phone: 603-532-8862.  The park is ~ one hour from Nashua, and a bit more than an hour from Concord.
  • Date:  Sunday November 04, 2018
  • Time:  10:00 AM
  • Duration:  4-5 hours
  • Hike Leader:  Matthew Lee
  • RSVP to: hikersvp@snhjmc.org

We will meet in front of the Visitor Center at 10 AM sharp, and start hiking at 10:15.  There are a few trail options to the top we will review with the group before we head up the mountain, but in any case the hike will be ~5 miles roundtrip, over rugged terrain.

Food and Drink:
You should plan to bring your own trail snacks, lunch, and water.  There is a park store that sells snack bars, drinks, and misc. items, but they have no kitchen or deli.  We will plan to eat lunch at the top, weather permitting.

Considerations:

Please be aware that while this is a popular and well maintained hiking area, there are steep sections with rapid elevation gain, making this a strenuous and challenging hike for some.  Please consider carefully your physical condition, hiking abilities, and hiking gear before committing – we would like this to be a great experience for all.

Your children are encouraged to participate, so long as accompanied by a parent/guardian, and that their physical endurance and interest in hiking are strong.  In my experience, kids under 6 may need to ride in a carrier.

Weather:
Historical daytime temperatures around Jaffrey are typically in the 40s to 50s at this time of year, but on the mountain, temperatures can be much lower, especially when considering wind.  Be sure to bring enough layers of clothing to be comfortable hiking in cold weather, including gloves and a hat.  More details below.

Rain Date:
If inclement weather is forecast, an email will go out to all who RSVPed the night before and we will reschedule (weather permitting) for the following Sunday, November 11th.

Also note that Mount Monadnock is a NH State Park, and dogs are not allowed.

Fees:  State Park fees are $5 per adult, and $2 per kid 6-11, which are paid as you enter the park, which includes parking.

What to bring:

Appropriate BROKEN IN hiking footwear (boots) and socks (synthetic or wool), so there will be no danger of forming painful blisters on the hike.

You should bring a hiking backpack to hold at minimum:

  • Sufficient water (I recommend 1-2 quarts for this hike)
  • Snacks and appropriate trail food (avoid sugary stuff)
  • Lunch (bring your own)
  • Appropriate head gear (I recommend a fleece or wool winter hat/cap that covers your ears)
  • Gloves (winter – fleece or wool lined)
  • Sunglasses
  • Whistle (school yard style)
  • Clothing – hiking/sports oriented long pants, long shirt, with long underwear as appropriate.  AVOID COTTON – the best choices are synthetic materials or wool.  Include backup clothing you can layer on/off as needed to match the weather.  As we gain elevation, the temperature will drop and the wind will pick up, so be prepared.
  • Spare socks
  • First Aid kit
  • Insect repellent as needed (typically late spring, summer, early fall)
  • Sunscreen as needed
  • Trail map (print in advance or pick up at the park) http://www.nhstateparks.org/uploads/pdf/Monadnock-State-Park_Hiking-Map.pdf
More information on Monadnock State Park can be found here:   https://www.nhstateparks.org/visit/state-parks/monadnock-state-park.aspx

Please RSVP, including your name and mobile number, so we will know who to expect, and so we can reach you if needed before the hike.  A phone number will be provided to all those who RSVP in case you need to reach the organizer by text or voice before the hike.
